Here is a cursory list of Grant books for children and young readers published in the past 15 years in the United States. Unless otherwise noted, the books are for readers aged 9-12. The following includes texts about Grant’s life, his role in the Civil War, and about Julia Dent Grant. Describing what the list does not contain indicates the broad range of media about Grant for young people. For example, this listing does not include educational websites about Grant or related topics. Nor does it survey children’s American history textbooks with sections or extended comment on Grant, where along with the Internet, most youngsters are likely to encounter his story. This cursory list also does not include writing on Grant for kids in publications or other media about the presidency or the Civil War era. Nor does the list contain biographies of others (such as Lincoln, Sherman, or Lee) in which Grant plays a role, children’s encyclopedia articles, or articles in children’s periodicals. Grant biographies in languages other than English, or published abroad, have not been surveyed. Children’s fiction, cartoons, comic strips or books, or graphic novels also have not been surveyed. Educational videos (see accompanying article) as well as educational board or card games, posters, and toys are also excluded. |
